It doesn’t have to be profound

Posted May 8th, 2011

I’m one of those perfectionists, in a way. I want my expressions to be… “just so.” Unfortunately, that kind of mentality is stifling. Nothing is perfect, and on one is perfect, right?

Maybe it’s better to start a conversation by showing vulnerability (truth), instead of purporting to solely effuse correctness (Truth). My truth is not The Truth, but really, I don’t think there’s such a thing as The Truth.

I mean, I say this shit all the time. Girls tell me bashfully, “I know.. I’m weird,” or ask, “I do X, is that weird?” I reply, “yes, that’s weird. And that’s a good thing. Everyone’s weird. The fun part is learning about each other’s weirdnesses. Like, why do you love travelling to new places, whether foreign or domestic? To see the differences. To see what strange and different thing they do over there. That’s what makes life interesting.”

I recently became a fan of Questionable Content. A big part of what’s so inspiring about it, is how much the author/artist has improved over the life of the series. I’ve only read up to #300, but already the difference in art quality is quite astounding. And the comments by the artist posted below each strip are revealing in an endearing way. He says things like, “It took me a long time to draw that, but I like how it came out,” or “I really don’t like how today’s strip ended up, but sometimes you have to just put something out there and move on.”

By diligently sticking to his schedule and showing that vulnerability I mentioned above, he’s gained a following, and it’s deserved. He inspired me to write this post for my site, which is the first one in several months. Thanks Jeph. I don’t think I have anything ultra-profound to say, but at least maybe a few of you will enjoy “QC” as much as I do, and that’ll make this post worth it.

We would love it if you shared your thoughts:
