The History of Love: “Our World”
Posted April 29th, 2010
Why were the ’60s such a powerful time in human history? Well, a lot of factors contributed. Here is an interesting one: June 25, 1967 was the first time there was ever a live television event broadcast globally via satellite. The production was called “Our World”.
An estimated 400 million people watched the broadcast, which was the largest ever audience at the time. 14 countries participated in creating the broadcast, including the US, Canada, Japan and Australia, with control rooms and performers in each location. There were over 10,000 technicians involved behind the scenes. Everything was performed and broadcast live.
The Beatles were among the many performers. They knew that this would be a global event, and this was during the Vietnam war. So John Lennon wrote “All You Need is Love,” specifically for the occasion. The broadcast showed them in the recording studio, recording the album version of the song. They had invited a choir, an orchestra, and some of their musical friends (including Eric Clapton and Keith Moon) to join in, in order to really get the energy flowing. You can see the original Beatles segment below:
There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be. Love is all you need.
-John Lennon
